The ‘net is huge and Google is smart, so I’m guessing that if you’re a special needs parent you did your clinical research before you came here. What you probably are most interested in now is having a glimpse into what other children’s lives are like and connecting with a special needs parent who gets it, so that’s what I aim to do here at Bringing the Sunshine. If you aren’t a special needs parent, then you’re welcome here, too! We’re more like you than we are different. Here’s a quick primer on what goes on here:
The menu is split into two major topic areas: Special Needs, and Everything Else.
The first category, Sarah Kate & Cerebral Palsy mostly covers Sarah Kate. She has cerebral palsy, so many of the posts contained therein have something to do with how cerebral palsy affects her – or how it doesn’t. It’s the story of her life, first and foremost. Occasionally, I throw in a post about what it’s like to be the parent of child with CP, or some other random CP-related topic, but it’s mostly about her trials and triumphs.
Similarly, Nathan & Down Syndrome is mostly about Nathan. He has mosaic Down syndrome, and he’s still young enough that we’re trying to figure out exactly what that means for him. He’s a hoot, so most of the posts are about his antics, though I do focus more on the condition of Down syndrome occasionally.
Special Needs & Disability is more of a hodge-podge of posts about what it’s like to live the life of a salmon swimming upstream. I talk about IEPs, accessible playgrounds, inclusion, the R-word, and whatever else strikes my fancy as an “associate member” (i.e., parent) of Disability World.
Me & My Musings is just what it says – posts about me and the things that I think about. A lot of them are confessions, some of them are frustrations, and some of them cover controversial topics. I do my best to be “sunny” not just on the blog, but in real life, but let’s be honest … this parenting gig is no joke, and life is just messy! I want my readers to see “warts and all” because that’s real life.
Faith, Fun & Family Life consists of all the posts that don’t fit neatly into another category – posts about road trips, the fire truck bed Mr. Andi built for Nathan, obligatory posts on Halloween … what-have-you.
Seven Snippets is a weekly feature inspired by Jennifer Fulwiler’s 7 Quick Takes. Each Friday, I post seven random things. Some are snippets of family life that don’t merit their own post, some are random YouTube videos I found online, some are updates on things we have going on … could be anything! But they’re short and to the point and provide a snapshot of our life.
Sun-Beams used to be a weekly feature, posted on Sundays, but now it goes up once near the end of each month. It’s a handful of links usually, but not exclusively, related to disability. I often feature individuals with disability who have achieved something significant, but I also share information on medical research, and ethical issues. It’s a regular dose of advocacy, inspiration, and/or education.

Choose a topic from the menu or the lists above, or learn more about us by reading my Ask Me Anything series. It was published back in the fall of 2012, so a few things here and there are a little bit out of date, but for the most part it’s a good introduction to what makes us tick.
